What is your perception of this well-known brand? The story behind how Airbnb came into being, is as amusing, as it is inspiring. But the more pressing question now is—how is the experience for guests today?
Recently, while visiting Kolkata for a short trip, I booked an Airbnb Super-host in a popular locality. Everything seemed smooth: the location, the check-in, the aesthetics, the amenities. Except—I was unwell when I arrived, very unwell. Canceling wasn’t an option, as the trip had an important objective. My condition worsened, and I found myself barely able to function. I had a high fever, body aches, couldn’t eat, and was communicating in whispers. The host saw this.
Now pause. Ask yourself—how would you have shown up as a host? Would you have stepped beyond the transactional agreement to simply offer a cup of steaming tea/coffee? A little food? Not out of obligation, but out of care?
My host did not. Only sweet, empty words of concern. Nothing more. Not a single act of compassion. It made me reflect—not just on one host, but on the spirit of hospitality and humanity.
Where is the Spirit?
The probable thought of my Super-host: “I didn’t sign up to serve what wasn’t paid for.” And that, right there, is how many operate—especially in the hyper-commercial realm of modern business. There’s warmth in the branding, but not always in the being. Empathy, compassion, a service mindset—all missing. The Spirit is missing.
Which brings us to the third “Q”—the one fewer talk about: Spiritual Quotient (SQ).
Beyond IQ and EQ: The Business of Being Human
It is sobering to realise how transactional life has become. We measure everything in money, efficiency, ROI. We chase speed over stillness, instant gratification over lasting meaning. We’re fine with plastic flowers over real blooms, fast food over soulful meals. We forget that we’re human.
We seek truth without earning it. We forget to pause and question. We disconnect from the deeper essence of who we are—our Spirit—in relentless pursuit of material comforts.
But to seek your Spirit is to return to your truest human qualities. To vibrate higher through love, empathy, courage, and kindness. That’s the home we’re all aching to return to.
The Inner Spring Cleaning
And yet, we run—from cities, jobs, relationships—looking for that next high, never realising the cracks are within. What we truly crave is peace. Not applause. Not status. Just peace.
But peace demands inner work. It demands silence. To sit with yourself when no one is watching. To see your reflection without the masks. To witness your own fears, your shadows, your truths. That is where transformation begins.
Let the silence stretch. Let it speak. Let awareness rise in that silence. You’ll be amazed by what it reveals—and how it shifts everything around you.
From Balance to Harmony
The world is catching on. Slowly. The buzzword is no longer “balance”—it’s harmony. And yet few grasp what that truly means. It isn’t about managing hours; it’s about aligning energies. Harmony isn’t an ideal, it’s a necessity—especially as stress, burnout, and toxicity escalate in workplaces.
We can’t meditate our way to Zen if we’re unwilling to face the chaos within. Harmony begins with the courageous choice to see clearly, feel deeply, and live intentionally. And that’s what Spiritual Quotient brings—awareness, authenticity, alignment.
Business with Soul
What does SQ have to do with business? Everything. Historically, great businesses weren’t just profit-driven—they were purpose-driven. They served the community, fostered trust, and embraced a deeper sense of service.
Today, logic often overrides intuition. Revenue trumps values. But true leadership is not just strategic—it is spiritual.
Think of icons like Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw, Jack Welch, Ratan Tata, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs. They led with vision, compassion, and integrity. Jack Welch once said, “Before you are a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is about growing others.” That’s SQ in action.
Steve Jobs echoed this when he said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” SQ isn’t a trend—it’s the soul of leadership.
SQ in the Age of AI
With AI on the rise, our greatest asset is what machines can’t replicate—our Spirit. In workplaces obsessed with KPIs, deadlines, and profits, SQ becomes the anchor.
It’s the force that elevates EQ and IQ. It’s about bringing your whole self—authentic, creative, compassionate—to everything you do. It’s about leading with values, not just visions. And the world is waking up to this.
More people today understand energy, frequency, and vibration. Wellness is shifting from spa treatments to spiritual awakenings. Practices like Quantum Energy Medicine are gaining ground for a reason—they speak to our deeper, untended needs.
Productivity from the Inside Out
We are all energy. Thoughts, emotions, intentions—they shape the environments we work in. And stress? It lingers like smoke, affecting morale, innovation, and productivity.
The real work is to clear the space—inside and out. To heal the spiritual smog clouding our workplaces. Investing in the spirit of people and the organisation is no longer optional—it’s urgent.
Start with leadership. Engage hearts, not just hands. Infuse intention into culture. Invite stillness, reflection, and healing into the corporate rhythm.
The Beginning of Return
We’ll close with the words of Jiddu Krishnamurti—philosopher, mystic, and mirror to the soul:
“Why are we such snobs? Why do we cling to the exclusiveness of name, position and acquisition? Is anonymity degrading, to be unknown despicable? Why do we pursue the famous, the popular?”
It’s time to pause. To feel. To remember who we are beneath the titles and transactions.
Because the future isn’t just digital or disruptive—it’s deeply spiritual.
Would you agree that ‘sound’ offers a more holistic experience compared to ‘visuals’? Let us try a simple experiment. Play a short audio-video clip, preferably something you haven’t watched earlier. Don’t watch it yet, look away from the screen and pay attention only to the sound (music or voice). Are you visualising corresponding images? Are you emotionally responding to what you are hearing?
Next, watch the visuals after muting the sound, and experience the feeling. Does watching the video without sound make you imagine the sound or voice in your mind? You will feel disconnected from the visuals because of the lack of sound.
Compare the difference in your responses during both instances.
Now, there was a time when no visual medium like television, cinema, computers or android phones existed, be it for entertainment or communication. Our only source of information or entertainment was based solely on our auditory ability through radio.
Now watch the video again, normally, with sound. Now, the visuals will make absolute sense along with the sound. So, sound makes the experience complete, but sound is also complete.
Sense of Hearing
Of all the five senses, the sense of hearing develops first, and it is the last to leave upon death. The data from a research led by Elizabeth Blundon, a PhD student of the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, shows that a dying brain can respond to sound, even in an unconscious state, up to the last hours of life.
“The body is held together by sound. The presence of disease indicates that some of the sounds have gone out of tune”–Deepak Chopra
Our existence with relation to Sound
It is astounding that we have a deep connection with sound. The reason being that the entire universe, including you and me, is born of sound. The Universe began with a very tiny dot that had immense concentrated energy. According to astrophysicists, this dot inevitably exploded with an unimaginable force, producing heat and sound that no human fabricated explosion on earth can replicate. They titled this explosion as ‘The Big Bang’. This explosion hurled energy in all directions, at the speed of light, creating billions of galaxies in the Universe and created matter, including celestial bodies, plants, animals, and us. So, living beings are the physical manifestation of pure sound energy. Sound energy, thus, is the source of our being, which also deeply rules our lives.
Let’s understand more about our existence in terms of particle physics. We all know that everything in the Universe has some amount of mass or energy (or both). Our physical form is mass, made up of trillions of cells. Breaking down these cells into further smaller particles would mean marvelling at the countless atomic particles that we comprise. We would then find subatomic particles – protons, neutrons and electrons. Did you know that protons and neutrons can be broken down further into elementary particles called quarks and gluons? Quarks and gluons are proven to be the fundamental constituent of matter. They don’t have any sub-structure themselves; they simply exist.
Quarks = Energy
Quarks were first proposed independently by American physicists Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig in 1963. Quarks and gluons bind matter with a strong nuclear force. They permeated the entire universe in a few fractions of a second after the Big Bang. When the universe cooled enough, quarks and gluons froze into protons and neutrons. That the explosion created quarks asserts that ‘sound’ is fundamental to everything in the Universe.
In particle physics, quark is a fast-moving point of energy. Protons and neutrons contain three quarks each. Quarks make protons and neutrons, which in turn make up the atomic structure of the trillions of cells we are made of. Biology defines ‘cells’ as the most basic units of life. Each cell is a complex structure that could theoretically survive, grow, reproduce and die on its own. The cells in our complex multicellular bodies, however, work together with similar cells to form structures called tissues. Tissues make up the different organs and other functional material in our bodies.
Cellular Health
We are made up of amazing cells of different types and they need to be fed what’s essential to optimize overall wellness. If the body is the physical manifestation of the formless mind and soul that makes our existence complete, then it is essential to nourish ourselves at physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels for holistic living for life.
Various forces act upon every life form and every speck of dust down to the smallest subatomic particle, influencing their existence in this world . To exist, to be in the universe, means that every particle in the universe feels some pull and push from the various forces around it — otherwise, it simply doesn’t exist. Considering that, every object in this universe has a vibrational frequency, including ourselves. It then makes sense that we respond to sound frequencies naturally. We all experience it and the greatest example is the way we respond to music, whether it is Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Bismillah Khan, Hariprasad Chaurasia, A R Rahman, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Yanni or Tchaikovsky.
With the spur of health disorders in the modern world, there’s also a movement of going back to ancient ways of healing our bodies holistically to promote wellness, especially cellular health, using energy healing. Cellular health through Sound Healing isn’t a new concept. Sound has an ancient kinship with meditation and healing. My Sound Healing Master Satya Brat Jaiswal shares, “From mantra chanting and blowing of the conch to bells or gongs in places of worships, or Himalayan singing bowls, there’s evidence of some form of sound healing in spiritual and religious ceremonies for invoking the divine and warding off negative energies in every culture around the world. We can trace it back 40,000 years when Australian aboriginals used ancient didgeridoos for healing.”
Dr. Holly Pollard-Wright, independent researcher and CEO of Wild Ride Wildlife Services, has drawn a theory of mind from classic and quantum physics. He says, “All living entities are intelligent, and those with brains and the central nervous system experience emotion and thus can suffer”. We link poor mood and elevated anxiety to increased incidence of disease. Heart disease, diabetes, addiction, and mental health issues have all been linked to stress and tension.
Energy = Vibration = Sound triggers Inner Self Healing Mechanism
Now we know that energy is the life force behind everything in the Universe. Since energy is vibrating all the time naturally, atoms containing quarks vibrate and therefore our cells are vibrating. Vibration is naturally linked to sound, so our body is like an instrument that needs retuning with the right frequencies when it goes out of sync. According to studies, ultrasonic pressure fields have been proven to be beneficial for cell growth in vitro and in patients. There have been successful reports on in vitro wound-healing and cell-growth studies under the influence of radio-frequency cell stimuli.
Modern medicine now uses sound waves to break up kidney and gallstones in the body. The machine used is called Lithotripter. It bombards the stone with a specific sound frequency, usually for one to two hours..
There’s quite a lot that goes on within our cells. As we get older, our cells accumulate damage. Our body eliminates, repairs and rebuilds its 37.2 trillion cells approximately on its own as a part of our body’s self-healing mechanism. For vitality and vigour, we must keep this mechanism activated. The self-healing mechanism is highly active when our body is in a thoughtless state, that’s the meditative state. Healing is not about removing diseases, because our body knows to heal itself. Healing is about returning our body to healthy vibrations, as vibration is fundamental to all matter.
Apart from a nutritious diet that promotes cellular health, saying goodbye to the toxins produced by stress needs to be a regular effort too. According to Hindu mythology, Vedic sages lived healthily almost throughout their long lifespan as they meditated regularly. Attaining this thoughtless or meditative state is a challenge in today’s modern world where we battle countless stress inducing stimuli. Sound healing has the power to take us to this very meditative state.
Syncing with Vibrational Frequency
Our thoughts create a physiological effect in our bodies. Every thought and emotion has its own vibrational frequency or wave frequency because thoughts are also sound waves. According to Tam Hunt, a philosopher of mind, biology, and physics, “All things in our universe are constantly in motion, vibrating. Even objects that appear to be stationary are vibrating, oscillating, resonating, at various frequencies“. When different oscillating things are close together for a time, they vibrate in sync. The synchronisation is a kind of physical communication between entities. This phenomenon is called ‘spontaneous self-organisation’. The simplest example is when we keep two clocks in the same room, their ticking automatically synchronises.
Recent studies in Integrative Medicines have found that an hour-long sound meditation helped people reduce tension, anger, fatigue, anxiety,, and depression while increasing a sense of spiritual well-being. There’s a scientific logic to it, if we study the physics of musical instruments, including the sonic and wave properties, as well as acoustic characteristics. Sound frequency impacts our sympathetic nervous system by synchronising our brain waves.
The World of Sound Therapy
Deep relaxation is one of the most significant and universal benefits of sound therapy. Sound healing has mental and physical health benefits in improving mood and reducing stress. When we are ill, our cells are out of sync. Sound therapy has the ability to identify these out of tune frequencies and when these sounds, or frequencies, are introduced back into our body, our brain then can send these ‘in tune’ or corrected frequencies to the damaged cells, to help facilitate healing.
The goal of sound therapy is attaining vibrational balance, restoring, and tuning the body. Our body is 75% water, and water is a great conductor of sound. Imagine your body as a glass beaker, as you see your cells immersed in water through the transparent surface. Now, visualise them receiving sound vibrations from the practitioner playing the sound healing instruments on the outside. You will see them joyfully dancing to the frequencies as they get busy syncing themselves with the sound vibrations. The vibrations massage every cell in the body. Unlike the usual massage therapy that heals through touch, this treatment works through your skin, muscles, tissue, and organs. When vibrations travel through the body, it promote circulation, energy flow, and rejuvenation by altering brainwaves.
Among the various forms of sound therapy, sound baths by playing the Himalayan singing bowls is the most predominantly practised art. When I was first introduced to the experience by a Dr. Shyam Suraj, fellow practitioner, I could feel the toxins creating havoc in my throat before I went into a trance. The dry cough was quite a discomfort, but I woke up feeling absolutely rejuvenated.
In my next experience, I received healing from my Master and my hands jerked the way we do when there’s an electric shock, following a deep meditative relaxation. The effect was blissfully calming, and I wanted to remain in that bliss forever. I realized after those sessions that something intrinsically is inhibiting me from letting anger take over my senses even if I am feeling upset.
Back home, when I performed the therapy on both my children, they went so deep into the meditative state that I had to use the Ting Sha bell over ten times to bring them back to consciousness. The serene look on their face was overwhelming. It intensified when they shared, they felt they had slept peacefully with no dreams after a long time.
This treatment brings emotions too to the surface, resulting in overwhelming responses. Body’s involuntary reactions like coughing, crying, jerks, anger, etc. indicate the presence of stress and toxins as the body tries to push them out of the system during the sessions. People going through the therapy have experiences that’s very personal to them depending on their current emotional state, lifetime of experiences and memories. Sound therapy is catching on in the scenario of holistic wellness, as there are plenty of reports that support this practice for both physical and psychological pain relief.
Gong Master Martha Collard of Red Doors Studio, Hong Kong, says, “Sound can shift frequencies from low energy of guilt and fear to higher vibrations of love and joy. Sound healing is the use of sacred instruments or voice to release energetic blockages inducing a state of ease and harmony in the body.” She adds, “The sound wave passing through the body stimulates red blood cells, and opens up the blood supply to all organs and throughout the body”.
We humans have an instinct for sound therapy. Just think about how your favourite song can lift your mood. It’s satisfying to conclude that we are blessed with the gift of hearing sounds, because sound healing offers a host of benefits that can improve our wellbeing, energy levels, performance at work while gently tuning ourselves to the Divine.
It would be interesting to ponder about the origin of Religion and Science. Intuition ruled over logical reasoning here!
Sound is pivotal to our existence! The foundational reason why sound, music and vibrational healing are the medicine of the future.
Bible says, ”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. There’s no beginning or end of God. God created this Universe that we came into being. Do you see any flaw in the precision of this orderly Universe? Think about how perfect the gravity is, neither is it more powerful than it is nor is it less powerful. It is just as strong as it is supposed to be to keep this Universe in order.
On the other hand the whole philosophy of Hinduism is based on the science of vibration condensed in just two words that make a whole sentence, ‘Nada Brahma’ – Sound is God, Sound is the Creator. So, god used sound to create the perfect Homo Sapien.
It is not a surprise that the recitation of Quran plays a central role in the life of a devout Muslim for it’s a fundamental Islamic belief that ‘Allah chose the sound of the human voice for his revelation’. The praising of Allah has a chant and the chant has a frequency. Sound waves of recitation of Holy Quran activate body cells and cure illnesses.
Sikhism is no different as it says ‘God created the Universe from one sound and from the sound millions of rivers flowed’. Sound is considered to be His Name literally said ‘Naam’ that Sikhs recite and call the process ‘Naam Jaap’. From this sound ‘Naam’ all beings are created so ‘Naam Jaap’ is pivotal to a Sikh. It means to create a strong vibration through ‘Naam Jaap’ that opens the path of transformation by vibrating the infinite cosmos within us.
History is replete with information that since the beginning of humanity, sound is being used to change consciousness. Sound has the power to alter our mood and elevate our thoughts. Whether it is the Drums in Africa, Gongs in Asia, Didgeridoo in Australia, Rainsticks in Chile, Temple bells in India, or the Singing Bowls from the times of Buddha, sounds from these ancient instruments have been used to foster a sense of unity and heightened collective consciousness. These sounds continue to sooth and comfort us.
You see ‘sound’ is the fundamental pillar of all ancient cultures and religions. Since eons we have. worshipped ‘Sound’ or used it in some form to elevate our respective communities. It’s an inherent inclination. The integration of human voice in the form of chanting of mantras, recitation of Quran, Naam Jaap, singing hymns and prayers with the practice of using sacred instruments like bells, gongs, conch prove our deep association with sound. All cultures have promoted spiritual growth, stronger connection with God, enlightenment, health and healing with such practices.
Now if ‘sound’ signifies growth, peace and harmony, something that every religion in this world preaches, why on earth are we attracting all kinds of diseases and disorders? This calls for a journey within ourselves, because we have the answers inside us. Our intuitive self knows, yet we turn a blind eye.
Think about the quality of life today. We have made wondrous progress in the field of science and technology. This constant advancement has enabled us to create all gadgets and tools of comfort and convenience. The unstoppable curiosity of the human mind has placed us in an era that our ancestors probably couldn’t have imagined. Economic growth has also been on a gradual uphill ride due to the wider reach of education and availability of professional opportunities.
Now take a pause from feeling glorious, and ask yourself the following fundamental questions. (If you feel comfortable, you can share your thoughts in the comments section.)
– How would you rate the quality of your relationships?
– How disease free and stress free are you?
– How good or bad are your stress levels?
– How happy do you fee intrinsically?
– Is your existence a harmonious one?
– How do you view societal progress as of today?
– What is your opinion about human bonding at community levels?
– How often do you witness acts of empathy, kindness and compassion?
I often find myself pointing out that healthy and loving relationships form the core of our happiness despite all the material luxuries we can afford to accumulate. Our happiness quotient is so much dependant on all our relationships, yet we have been moving away from this primary truth. Burying head into sand is not going to ease the pain. Ignorance isn’t bliss here. The stress we experience is proof that we are going wrong somewhere with something so crucial to our harmonious existence. While stress is a part of dealing with life itself, it is a fact that life’s challenges enhance our mentally capability and makes us emotionally stronger. It’s high time, we address acute and unhealthy stress, an indication of imbalanced life. Instead we accept diseases and disorders as normal treating them with medical intervention.
We do not pay heed to the fact that we are losing the rhythm. Following erratic schedules, unhealthy lifestyle, choosing unfavourable food, depriving ourselves of sleep, alarmingly high cell phone usage, too much entertainment and pleasure is leading us to being wrecks. Adding to this, we blissfully ignore the dreadful frequencies we are surrounded with, by virtue of the unwanted radiation that gadgets and gizmos emit. We are responsible for driving out music from our being and creating cacophony in our lives instead.
Science has proven that every entity in this Universe is constantly tuning with other entities. Our body remains in constant stress searching for harmonious frequencies. Knowingly we are constantly exposing our body, mind and soul to unwanted stress. This indeed is a surest way to invite all sorts of physical diseases and mental disorders.
Depression, insomnia, addiction, dysfunctional thyroid, migraine, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, ulcer, spondylosis, obesity, infertility, autism are just a few known monsters from a never-ending list. Surprisingly, we have accepted them as part of living. Why aren’t we yearning to live without these monsters? It’s indeed going to be a lot of work on ourselves. Sadly, we are so complacent about understanding how being in rhythm with the Universe is elemental to our wellbeing. It is always easier blaming everything but ourselves in taking control of our lives.
Sparing a few who practice mindfulness, most of us are engulfed with illnesses, we are negatively contributing to collective consciousness. Take stock of the state of collective consciousness in this world today. Degraded to the pit, adults abusing and abandoning their parents, broken marriages, number of children being orphaned, cases of murders and sexual offences, wars, causing damage to the environment, torturing animals, corporate rate race, dirty politics, fake gurus – where is humanity headed?
Are we being sound? Humans have reduced to mechanical beings, utterly out of tune – a perfect song without a soul. A sound person is an embodiment of sound mind, sound soul, and sound body. This inference will only get clearer and meaningful as you delve deeper into the spirit and mysticism of sound.
Coincidentally, I have been receiving several inquiries from distressed mothers of children in the autistic spectrum. Sound Healing practice interestingly is all about applying intuitive wisdom. Hence, I find it crucial to first understand the mother, her childhood challenges, professional life, marital life, pregnancy period and post pregnancy time. This gives enormous insights into deriving at why the child started showing autistic symptoms. So should the mother be healed first or child?
We still prefer to live in denial of how stress gets transferred, how far it can travel and the depth of the damage it causes. It is TIME we wake up to taking responsibility of all our misdoings, practice mindful and intentional living, surrender to the rhythm of the Universe, fall in tune with the music inside us and embrace the true meaning of being sound for that is the only way to salvage humanity.
One of our professional sound healers made this profound statement a few days ago, which in itself creates an understanding of the entire cosmos for us.
“Our individual awareness is only rooted in our unique habit patterns, in some scars, in our limited vision. We mostly see ourselves in whatever light we already are present, as our world is only as big as we understand it in this tiny moment.
Collective Consciousness is a primordial source of strength when you, me & we as individual beings can connect to witness ourselves in a new light, begin to see how we are not defined by the world outside of us instead we’re defined by the unique healing potential within.
The ability of collective consciousness is to inspire a deeper awakening within and to help us to not be defined by the external attributes of the society or the world around us but to find inner attributes – a new way to see ourselves and a new way to see the world.
When individuals are rooted in this collective consciousness we tend to find a role, a purpose, a meaning to our life, become natural, we taste harmony. We become healthy. Healthy individuals together create a powerful, positive group awareness. So, when we speak of collective consciousness, it is an elevated group awareness that is rooted in best part of ourselves, best of humanity, a shared vision to grow together – this is where Sound Energy connects us all – that equivalent power which is binds the planets of our Solar System, one that moves all stars in our Milky Way, resonating in its frequency, in a rhythm, individually yet collectively.
Sound Healing is made of such mystical powers, the power of frequency and intention which resets us, make us return to a natural state of ease & harmony, realigns our individual awareness to the higher realms of consciousness and elevate collectively, so we all radiates love & glow with purest energy that illuminates our Universe – inside & outside of us.” – Sound Practitioner [Dhwani, Sound Meditation & Mindfulness].
Dr. Shyam Suraj, a gifted percussionist and certified sound healer adds:
“In sound healing, collective consciousness enhances the healing effects through group sessions where shared intentions and resonance amplify healing vibrations. Participants synchronise energies, fostering unity and transcending individual boundaries, leading to a profound sense of interconnectedness. The collective field of resonance strengthens healing intentions, promoting coherence and balance at both individual and group levels.” – Founder – Dr. Shamrock Foundation & Drum Events India Pvt. Ltd.
Sound is the source of this entire creation called the Universe. It is also the sustenance of this creation. Sound has the power to both create or destroy life. For we are a part of this creation, our reason for being alive and functioning is deeply associated with sound. Yet, the power of sound is beyond human comprehension. Surrendering to the profound healing powers of sound is the only way forward for physical wellness and mental health.
Sound is pivotal to our existence! You will eventually see that sound, music and vibrational healing are going to be the medicine of the future.
Are you ready to embrace the power of sound in your life? If you are contemplating it, trust your intuition and reach out to a certified sound meditation practitioner to take you through this mystical journey of tuning your body with healing frequencies.

Sound was always the medicine and it shall remain an eternal fact irrespective of our belief systems, usually influenced by limitedness. We are yet to understand that this medicine isn’t sold off the shelf because it is available to all of us, in abundance. Whether we value it, harness it, and use it to heal ourselves, is an available choice.
Recently a good friend of mine introduced me to one of her neighbour with a 16 year old autistic son. Her intent was to help them by persuading this mother to explore sound therapy for her son. We briefly exchanged notes about my work in sound healing and promised to connect soon. A few days passed, I texted her warmly inviting her to our healing centre to experience a sound meditation session for herself first. Her cold response, “I am not interested in trying out these.”, jerked me off initially, it simply highlighted how most of us choose to remain in the cocoon of complacency, and egoism of comfortable limitedness. The choice to consume chemicals that never cure anything has become a habit with everyone.
It’s a clear divide. One is a section of people who are forever driven by their innate curiosity to explore and remain open to learning, fearlessly embracing innovations to improve their lives. The latter is probably a larger section that’s skeptical, fearful and too lazy to even do their own research driven by their social conditioning, preconceived notions and egoistic symptoms of ‘I know it all’, that demands proof, evidence and validation. Which one do you belong to?
Unless there’s a revolution in the medicine domain, or the media flashes a sensational breakthrough, how many of us would seriously care to pay attention to something that is staring on our face? Lately much has been written about ‘sound healing’, yet the concept is popular only amongst a select few. Those display superior intellect, elevated sense of empathy, willingness to listen to what others have to say while remaining humble about their own knowledge and expertise.
Let’s dive in to unravel some facts to comprehend how the concept of ‘Sound Energy’ as the medicine of future came into being.
Long ago, an eccentric scientist said, “If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration”. You would have probably come across this statement already, and ignored it too. I paid more attention to this when I delved into the world of sound healing, as a practitioner. Nikola Tesla must have been simply crazy to have said those words, because it takes a genius of a mind and heart like his, to sense this truth that is foundational to our creation. Sadly, such a genius was never a part of school curriculum, so we grew up knowing about the work and contributions of many scientists, but him.
Have you heard about Cymatics? Dr. Hans Jenny a Swiss medical doctor pioneered studying the visible proof of sound and vibration on physical matter and coined the term ‘Cymatics’ for this field of science. It vividly demonstrates how sound influences matter and its molecular structure. He recorded a photographic documentation of the effects of sound vibrations on various substances and published his findings in the first volume of this book Cymatics: The Study of Wave Phenomenon, subsequently the second volume in 1972, the year he left this physical world. Preceding Dr. Hans Jenny, German Physicist and Musician Ernst Chladni had pursued his experiments with acoustics way back in 1783 when he began teaching law, mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Wittenburg, Germany. He invented techniques to show various shapes and patterns created by various modes of vibrations on metal plates or membranes. He is also regarded as the ‘Father of Acoustics’. You will be amazed to know he was inspired by the work of another genius Robert Hooke, a physicist, astronomer, geologist, meteorologist and architect, an eminent name in the 17th century who dwelled in England. It was in 1680 that Robert Hooke observed running a violin bow along the edge of a glass plate covered with flour formed patterns due to the vibrations.
The geometrical patterns formed due to sound waves that were physically visible in the experiments by these geniuses are a testimony to the truth that the whole Universe is a manifestation of vibrations. Each entity, including us, is a tiny part of that ‘whole’, a reality that is not always physically visible. Dr. Hans Jenny’s curiosity to unveil the spiritual aspect of science led him to further his research and create a ‘tonoscope’ to observe the effect of the human voice on different materials, in varied media. Speaking or singing into the device generated distinct shapes and patterns corresponding to different vowels, which were also affected by the changing pitch. All the formations exhibited distinct rhythm, texture, movement, and rotation. So you see, our world is defined by rhythm and vibration.
Interestingly, Indian Sufi Mystic and Musician Hazrat Inayat Khan said, “Those scientists who have made experiments with sound on certain plates–whose impressions appear like forms–will find one day that the impression of the voice is more living, deeper, and has a greater effect. Sound can be louder than the voice, but sound cannot be more living than the voice”. This deep thought has the power to provoke a myriad emotions in us! It isn’t surprising, then, to decipher the true meaning of the saying, “Before you speak, THINK”. The voice carries the vibration of every word we utter due to our thought, intention, and emotion that becomes the reality as it imprints the pattern in the space invisible to the eye.
I am fortunate to have met the globetrotting Jill Purce, British Voice Teacher recently through a virtual interaction. A super senior, this legendary lady has been pioneering the international sound healing movement through ancient traditions of vocal techniques and teaching of overtone chanting. Her profound knowledge about the healing powers of the human voice is unparalleled. Learning from her has enhanced my wisdom and added a beautiful dimension to my practice with voice healing.
Jill Purce says, “When we use our voices for chanting together, we literally vibrate our brains and bodies, experiencing a form of vocal healing and purification bringing dissonant parts of our physical, emotional, mental, or social makeup back into resonance. We cleanse and tune the chakras, learning sonorous massage, truly healing with sound, to safely set free redundant or outmoded parts of our selves. Working with the healing voice in this way empowers our lives. Chanting directly stimulates the release of endorphins, giving rise to states of enhanced awareness, blissful calm, and other deep meditative states. Unlocking the voice balances the mind and body, bringing physical health, emotional joy and spiritual ecstasy
While we dwell on the magic, spirituality and science of sound and voice, Dr. Kulreet Choudhary, a celebrated neurologist, author and a pioneer in the field of integrated medicine, along with her Yogi husband Joshua Barr have been pursuing extensively noteworthy work in healing people with mantra chanting. They have been on a noble mission to create awareness about the healing powers of mantras that activate energy centres in the body called ‘chakras’, aiding holistic wellness with ‘Sound Medicine’. A spiritually enlightened soul, Joshua Barr is a master of mantra chanting, with a deep understanding of this gift available for our health and healing.
Scientific study by Saketh M., PhD student at Centre for Consciousness Studies in NIMHANS, Bangalore have proven the powerful activation of the brain cells that get enabled due to the gamma oscillations created un the brainwave pattern, by the chanting of Nirvana Shatakam composed by Adi Guru Shankaracharya.
Such scientific evidences prove: “Sound has the power to affect our ‘inner workings’ and assist in rearranging dissonance into a natural state of coherence”.
If you find yourself opening up to the deeper understanding of the truth that vibrations rule our lives and influence our health, it’s time you dwell on it a little more. It’s time you give some credence to the human curiosity that has brought in such awareness through the intellect of the geniuses mentioned here. The power to shape up our reality and the means to attaining holistic health is obviously in our reach, right here, right now. Ready to expand the way you look at the world and your health, or still waiting for more evidence to be served?
